1.55 Pontefract – PULL THE RUG (1pt win – 10/1 bet365)
PULL THE RUG wouldn’t look an obvious bet in this 5f maiden having finishing, almost 20 lengths behind the winner when seventh of ten at Haydock on her debut earlier this month. However, her high draw was a massive disadvantage that day and she was fairly strong in the market, going off as the 13-2 fourth favourite. The badly berthed ninth – Andrew Balding 9-1 shot Wren Runner – was two and a half lengths behind Pull The Rug gave the form a minor boost when second at Windsor earlier this week. Pull The Rug is only the second Mehmas juvenile to line up for Ed Bethell and the other one – Rogue Temptation – won second time out after finishing unplaced on her debut.
2.55 Pontefract – POINT LYNAS (1pt win – 11/8 William Hill)
POINT LYNAS won this 1m Listed contest by five and half lengths last year and Ed Bethell’s front-runner could again prove hard to catch. The six-year-old did too much too soon into the headwind when a 16-1 eighth of nine at Doncaster back in March and bounced back with a solid fourth to Zabiari in Group 3 company at Chantilly. He split Never So Brave and Haatem when a 22-1 second in the Group 2 Summer Mile Stakes at Ascot last time and he also won in the corresponding week in 2022.
