3.12 Curragh – KING CUAN (1pt e/w – 10/1 William Hill bet365)
Traditionally, it isextremely difficult to make ground from off the pace in the Abergwaun Stakes and last month’s renewal of that 5f Listed contest at Tipperary contest again proved to be a front-runners’ benefit, with the winner, Fozzy Stack’s 8-1 shot Grand Marques (“made all”), and half-length runner-up Erosandpsyche (“prominent, went second after 2f”) on the front end throughout. The pair pulled more than two lengths clear of KING CUAN (“dwelt start, towards rear on far side”) who was undoubtedly the one to take from the race. Paddy Twomey’s four-year-old now has form figures aside from seasonal debuts of 111133 (4-6) and will benefit from the return to 6f in this Group 3 contest. Curragh expert MY MATE ALFIE bombed out when I put him up in the Sprint Cup at Haydock last time, but he won this race last year and will be happier back at this venue. BIG GOSSEY has finished second in this race for the past two years and is another I’d throw into the mix for combination forecasts/trifectas.
4.22 Curragh – SHACKLETON (0.5pt e/w – 16/1 generally)
It’s three years since the Irish Cesarewitch received a massive prize money boost (now worth €324,000 to the winner, up from €47,200 in 2021) and in that time those aged five and older have a 0-62 record. It looks like the days of hurdlers winning this race are over and, with Aidan O’Brien taking the honours last year with a handicap debutant, I’m going to chance another in the form of SHACKLETON. The three-year-old Camelot colt looked in need of the step up to this sort of trip when keeping on into second place behind Al Riffa in Group 2 company over 1m6f here in July and the winner has since followed up in the Irish St. Leger. Shackleton, who split St Leger winner/runner-up Scandinavia and Rahiebb when a close-up fourth in the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot, could only finish fifth of six at York on his first attempt at 2m last time but that was behind Trawlerman/Sweet William (winner since) and he did too much too soon in the first-time cheekpieces.

Andrew’s Angles – Vital Gelding Stats And Trainers To Watch
