4.22 Brighton – OTAGO (0.5pt e/w – 22/1 generally)
It’s pretty grim stuff in Britain today with just Worcester and Brighton but I want a small each-way interest on in-form Jim Boyle’s OTAGO who impressed me when winning here on September 9th last year, as he raced off the favoured stands’ side rail on soft ground. The veteran has won five of his 25 starts at today’s venue, improving to five from 15 at today’s 7f trip) for a profit of £8.21 to a £1 level stake at SP. On genuinely good or slower ground (judged by race times, not the officially going description) his 7f Brighton record improves to 6111862117 (5-10) for a profit of £13.21. The GoingStick reading of 5.6 suggests genuinely good ground (it was rated ‘good’ by Proform when the stick reading was 6.0 at the August 8th meeting) and he’s worth a punt.
4.30 Tipperary – EROSANDPSYCHE (0.5pt e/w – 25-1 bet365, Boylesports, Quinnbet – all paying four places)
Tipperary’s card is far more attractive than the British fare and I’m drawn to the 5f Listed Abergawny Stakes, as this has been a poor record for hold-up horses (0-47 in the past ten years). Five winners made all (from the 12 who attempted to do so) for a profit of £24.13 to a £1 level stake at SP, while five (from 45) were prominent (-£2.13). EROSANDPSYCHE, who usually goes from the front, hasn’t won since August 2022, but injury has interrupted his career in the interim (seven runs in last three years) and he looked to retain a significant chunk of his ability when third in a Listed contest at Cork in mid-June on his debut for in-form Daniel Murphy. His two runs since – both disappointing – have come in more competitive contests at the Curragh, latterly in a Group 2, and it might just be worth chancing him to bounce back at a track where his record reads 11612 (3-5), with the defeat by a nose in this race three years ago.
