It’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe day at Longchamp and Andrew Mount has two tips for the cracking card in Paris, whilst he has a solitary selection from Kelso on UK shores as well.
Posted: 8.55pm, Saturday, October 4th
1.50 Longchamp – MGHEERA (1pt e/w – Paddy Power, Ladbrokes, BetVictor, all paying four places)
MGHEERA could only finish 14th of 16 to Ed Walker’s Makarova (tipped in this column) in last year’s Prix De l’Abbaye but was a 51-1 shot and didn’t have a prayer from stall 16 of 16. The daughter of Zoustar joined Ed Walker after her subsequent sixth place at Chantilly and has done well for her new handler this term, scoring over today’s course and distance on her reappearance before landing the Group 2 Temple Stakes at Haydock (albeit when well drawn). She hasn’t been disgraced in Group 1 company the last twice and while her tendency to start slowly can cause problems, the favourable low draw, return to Longchamp and double-digit price make her worth chancing.
4.25 Longchamp – ZOUM ZOUM (0.5pt e/w – 66/1 generally, preferably with William Hill who are paying one-quarter the odds first four)
ZOUM ZOUM caught the eye when a 25-1 fourth to Marvelman in the Group 2 Park Stakes at Doncaster last month, doing best of those to come from off the pace. Ralph Beckett’s gelding usually comes good in the autumn and is on my radar for the Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot later this month. His record in the September-November period now reads 1113164 (4-7) and he can out-run huge odds in the 7f Group 1 Prix de la Floret before a possible trip to Ascot. The more rain the better.
4.53 Kelso – TOP TIER GOSSIP (1pt win – 9/2 bet365)
I wrote up TOP TIER GOSSIP in Racing & Football Outlook after her debut second to Gore Point (winner of two handicap hurdles since and now rated 99) in a Stratford bumper where she was left with too much to do on that pace-favouring track and I’ve been watching her closely eve since. Dan Skelton’s five-year-old has been campaigned very much with handicaps in mind since switched to hurdles and looks very interesting now up in trip in handicap hurdle company and off a mark of just 86. The first-time cheekpieces could also bring about improvement and backing Skelton’s runners in this headgear, who finished fifth or worse last time out, would have found 22 winners from 116 bets (19% strike-rate) for a profit of £53.25 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 17.00, A/E = 1.29).
