4.53 Bath – BIG BEAR HUG (2pt win – 5/1 bet365, William Hill)
BIG BEAR HUG ran a huge race in a 1m2f handicap at Doncaster on Lincoln Day, racing prominently into the headwind and getting only limited cover from the elements. Adam West’s five-year-old was in third place on turning in and moved up to dispute the lead just after three out. She went a few lengths clear under 7lb claimer Alice Bond but was reeled in by Destinado, who was ridden patiently in the early stages. The two that were ahead of her as they approached the straight dropped away to finish ninth and 11th, finishing about 20 and 43 lengths behind her. The cheekpieces, on for her heavy-ground Newmarket success in November but missing at Doncaster, are back on today and Trevor Whelan takes over in the saddle. Whelan was on board for that HQ win and also rode her to victory at Leicester last spring.
5.55 Bath – SARAH’S VERSE (1pt win – 9/2 BetVictor, Coral)
SARAH’S VERSE has a great record at this time of year, recording form figures in April/May of 1341181521356 (5-13) for a profit of £21.88 to a £1 level stake at SP, compared to just one win from 40 in other months. Her April/May record when rested for more than four weeks reads 111 (3-3) with the wins, two of them here at Bath, at odds of 12-1, 8-1 and 9-2. She’s been off for 68 days and the booking of Hollie Doyle looks significant.
