I like backing progeny of the sire Sioux Nation in small fields and while CINQUE VERDE qualifies on that angle in this 6f handicap I’m worried about her stamina over this trip in the mud and will leave her alone today. FINE INTERVIEW will be popular given form figures on officially soft going of 1121 (3-4), with the defeat by half a length over 7f (the wins all came at today’s distance) but he’s priced accordingly, and I’d rather play each-way on WODAO, as most firms are paying three places (assuming all seven go to post). Jamie Osborne’s son of Showcasing has a solid record on soft/heavy going a and his two runs over course and distance produced a 25-1 third to Sergeant Wilko in Class 2 company last August and a 4-1 head second to Chairmanoftheboard in a Class 3 handicap. Stall 7 of 7 wouldn’t be great on good or faster going but the near side rail is likely to be favoured on the prevailing very soft going and he can get cover from the forecast headwind before pouncing late. I’m also going to play him in a forecast with Fine Interview.
4.10 Goodwood – SPIRIT MIXER (1pt win – 3/1 William Hill)
SPIRIT MIXER has lost all 13 starts in fields of 12 or more runners but has a seven from 21 record in fields of 11 or less. Combine a smallish field with a recent run (42 days or sooner his latest start) and his record becomes 63321712111437411 (7-17) for a profit of £13.08 to a £1 level stake at SP. Andrew Balding’s gelding is 2lb lower than when third in this race last year, handles soft ground and he did well to finish a 28-1 seventh of 15 from a poor high draw in the Chester Cup last time.
