1.50 Doncaster – JEL PEPPER (2pt win – 4/1 Betfred, Ladbrokes, Coral) & LION OF MALI (0.5pt e/w – 50/1 generally)
JEL PEPPER was a huge eyecatcher in a similar contest at Naas last time, finishing fourth of 21 but doing clear best of those who raced on the far side of the track when there was a massive stands’ side bias. Which Wolf Wins, second best of the far side bunch, finished a good second in a Curragh handicap next time, ninth-placed Amiata, who raced down the middle, has won since, while 11th-placed Sanctijude, third best of the low draws, ran a close second in a Galway maiden on her next outing. Oliver Cole’s gelding clocked a fast time for that effort and should be clear favourite.
Five of the past ten winners were drawn in stall 3 or lower and LION OF MALI could go well for in-form James Fanshawe, despite only finishing fifth of nine when 6-1 for a Chelmsford maiden on his recent debut. That run was much better than it looked as he fared second best of those to come from off the pace and was poorly drawn to boot. Slow turf will suit on breeding, and the rain has arrived in time.
2.25 Doncaster – MOON TARGET (1.5pt win – 2-1 bet365)
MOON TARGET lost her 100% record when going down by three-quarters of a length to Aidan O’Brien’ Precise in the Prestige Fillies’ Stakes at Goodwood last time but the ground was faster than ideal, and she came from further back than the winner and third. Horses who were ridden patiently in their prep race are six from 22 in the past ten renewals of this 1m Group 2 contest for a profit of £39.30 to a £1 level stake at SP and she’s the sole qualifier this year.
3.00 Doncaster – FLORESTA (0.5pt e/w – 16/1 Ladbrokes, Coral, 14/1 generally)
The Johnny Murtagh-trained FLORESTA is progressing nicely, recording RPRs (Racing Post Ratings) of 68, 79, 82, 93 and 95 in her five-race career. The three-year-old daughter of Waldgeist clocked a fast time (according to Proform’s speed figures) when arriving late to score by more than four lengths in a 1m6f Listed contest at Leopardstown last time, reversing earlier course form with runner-up Happy Pharoah. This course and distance will suit her come-from-behind style and she looks over-priced.
3.35 Doncaster – CASTLE STUART (1pt win – 13/2 Ladbrokes, Coral)
It paid to be on the front end in the Sky Bet Steve Birch Finale Handicap at York last month in which 11-1 chance DAIN MA NUT IN (“led”) got the better of PER CONTRA (“in touch with leaders”) by a neck, with WESTRIDGE (“prominent, in touch with leaders after 4f”) the same distance away in a dead heat for third. Richard Fahey’s CASTLE STUART (“raced wide, towards rear”), the other dead-heater in third, did best of the closers and was also clear best of the three-year-olds. The 28-1 shot, a dual winner for Karl Burke, was making his stable debut after changing hands for 165,000gns last month and looks very interesting today. Progeny of Dubawi are 13 from 37 at Doncaster’s Leger meeting since 2020 (35.1% strike-rate, +£57.20 to a £1 level stake at SP). The three-year-olds were five from 13 in the same period for a profit of £28.38.

Andrew Mount On…Ray Dawson: Analysis Of Underrated Jockey
Last Saturday, the hugely entertaining ‘Upping the Ante’ column in the Racing Post posed the question “Who is the most underrated jockey riding on the Flat?” and Johnny Dineen answered as follows… “One of my biggest assets over the years was identifying jockeys who were underrated or even overrated and there is an edge there…
