2.15 York – GOOD EARTH (1pt ew – 40/1 Coral, 33-1 bet365)
GOOD EARTH lines up here on the back of two ‘duck eggs’ but had excuses on each occasion. Michael Herrington’s seven-year-old needed the run when a 66-1 11th of 12 at Kempton on last month’s return to action (he also has a poor strike-rate on the all-weather, one from 26 compared to ten from 41 on turf) and soft ground put too much emphasis on stamina when 12th of 16 at Doncaster next time. He won three times over 5f on turf last season and though those victories came on stiff tracks – Beverley, Newmarket (July) and Sandown – he has had a good record at York, recording form figures of 1st (20 ran), 2nd of 15 and 2nd of 15 in his three course outings on fast ground. Those runs all took place over 6f but he’s a big price for this 5f handicap today and looks worth chancing.
3.30 Salisbury – MISS STORMY NIGHT (2pt win – 9/4 bet365)
MISS STORMY NIGHT caught the eye on her handicap debut at Bath last time, doing clear best of those to come from the rear when a 17-2 third over the 5.7f trip on good ground. Today’s stiffer test of stamina will suit and the daughter of Night Of Thunder and she’s likely to prove hard to beat.
5.20 York – PER CONTRA (1pt win – 12/1 generally)
PER CONTRA overcame greenness to win comfortably from off the pace at Chepstow on his debut (not easy to do), landing some hefty bets in the process, and followed up in facile fashion when prohibitive odds at Ffos Las. He didn’t look suited by the track when only fifth of seven in the Group 3 Autumn Stakes at Newmarket on his final juvenile outing and return from a six-month break to score gamely over 1m4f at Wolverhampton early last month. The subsequent gelding operation could bring about further improvement and the Ollie Sangster yard is in good form.
