From November to April his record reads U762213P5296P956 (1-16) for a loss of £13.00. The nine-year-old confirmed his wellbeing with a 16-length romp in handicap hurdle company at Sedgefield 24 days ago, despite racing on unsuitably slow ground. Wincanton seems to avoided the rainfall that has affected most of the UK – the going is officially good, good to firm in places on the chase course – and the return to fences will suit.

I always back Harry Derham’s stable switchers – horses he takes over from other trainers – and plenty collapse into very short odds before winning. That wasn’t the case with DIPLOMATIE at Warwick a fortnight ago, who drifted from 10-1 to 14-1 before finishing a three-quarters of a length third under owner/rider Victoria Malzard. Long-suffering readers/viewers of my waffle for GG.co.uk will recall the same jockey riding Kansas City Chief to victory at 20-1 in a Pertemps Qualifier at Cheltenham back in October 2021 (I tipped him on Weekend Watch – like and subscribe on YouTube if you haven’t already) and that was the race I had in mind for the six-year-old mare. Perhaps she’ll still run at Cheltenham, but she lines up here in a very winnable race on her favoured quick ground and I can’t resist an interest.
