3.00 Goodwood – MEYDAAN (1pt win – 9/1 Ladbrokes, Sky Bet)
I’m not convinced that Aidan O’Brien’s unbeaten colt JAN BREUGHEL will be suited by the sharp/undulating nature of this track and there could be an upset in the Gordon Stakes. Align The Stars, the 14-1 outsider of five, has possibilities but I prefer the claims of MEYDAAN, who emerged best of the British-trained runners when fourth in the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot. The Crisford-trained Frankel colt was a 1m3f course winner on his penultimate start and his earlier Lingfield Derby Trial third to Ambiente Friendly and Illinois has been well advertised.
6.15 Wolverhampton – CITY HOUSE (2pt win – 11/4 bet365, Sky Bet, 5-2 generally)
CITY HOUSE was a big eyecatcher over course and distance last September on his third career start, staying on well to finish a three-quarters of a length second at odds of 9-1, and duly hacked up at Kempton on his handicap debut the following month. He finished unplaced on turf on his first two runs this tear but returned to form with a narrow second at Kempton on June 12 and placed in Class 2 company at Newcastle later the same month. The switch from James Fanshawe to George Scott could bring about improvement – his new handler is seven from 41 at the first time of asking with horses he takes over from other yards (+£12.28 to a £1 level stake at SP) and four of the last five qualifiers have wone (16-1, 6-1, 9-2 and 4-9). He’s nicely drawn in stall 7 and should encounter the required strong pace.
