2.10 Sandown – GOOD EARTH (1pt win – 7/1 Paddy Power)
GOOD EARTH bombed out completely in Abarama Gold’s race at York last time, coming home 14th of 18 in that 6f handicap. However, he weas poorly drawn in stall 17 (non-runner adjusted) when it was a big advantage to be drawn low (first five drawn 2, 1, 6, 4 and 7). Michael Herrington’s veteran has always been best over 5f, especially on a stiff track, and could bounce back this afternoon. His record in handicaps over 5.5f or shorter, when returned to the track 20 days or sooner his latest start, reads 1113391181563115207 (8-19) for a profit of £27.70 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 2.92, A/E = 2.74). Three of those runs came at Sandown, resulting in two wins (8-1 and 7-1) as well as a 100-30 one-length third after meeting trouble in running. He’s been dropped 2lb for that York run and is now 5lb lower than when scoring here last August.

8.40 Yarmouth – RATHGAR (0.5pt e/w – 12/1 bet365, William Hill, Boylesports, all paying four places)
RATHGAR won this race on good to firm ground 12 months ago and won’t have any issues with the much softer going this time around. Jack Channon’s five-year-old is one of only a couple in today’s race who like to race up with the early pace and he’s only 1lb higher in the handicap than last year. He twice ran well at Epsom/Chester in the spring, finishing second and third and can be forgiven his subsequent tenth of 13 at Epsom on Oaks Day as he was ridden patiently on a day such tactics were impossible to pull off. All 35 hold-up horses from that meeting were beaten and two of them – Miss Information and Havana Hurricane – won at Royal Ascot next time out.
