2.27 Perth – STEP ABOVE (1pt win – 8/1 generally)
STEP ABOVE ended last season with an 18-length defeat at Kelso and was also beaten by a similar margin at the same venue on his penultimate start. That took his record since scoring at Ayr on his rules debut back in November 2022 to 0-7 but he underwent wind surgery over the summer and that could be the key. That 12-1 Ayr win came on his first start following a wind operation. Lucinda Russell has a seven from 30 record with chasers on their first start after wind surgery, in Class 4 or lower company only, for a profit of £60.25 to a £1 level stake at SP. I’ve saved on GIVE ME A MOMENT who could get loose on the lead.

3.45 Pontefract – HI YA MAL (0.5pt ew – 12/1 generally)
HI YA MAL trailed home last of 13 at Kempton on his debut earlier this month but Andrew Balding’s 11-1 shot blew the start, losing several lengths as a result. He recovered to race at the back of the main back but was keen and green and never made any meaningful headway. However, progeny of his sire – New Bay – are rarely ready to go at the first time of asking but often take a big step forward on their second outing, with the juveniles landing 29 of their 122 such starts (23.8% strike-rate) for a profit of £97.60 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£298.48 at Betfair SP after 2% commission). The profit is all down to a recent 100-1 winner but plenty of the beaten horses ran well at big prices, including 13 seconds (at up to 66-1) and 15 thirds (at up to 50-1). The forecast rain is unlikely to inconvenience him and he’s worth a small each-way play.

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Always Back an In-Form Filly in the Autumn
One racing cliché that’s often rolled out at this time of year is to “side with fillies in form”. However, you’ll rarely, if ever, hear a pundit or journalist back this up with data so I thought I’d take a closer look to see if this is a profitable punting angle. The following table shows…
