6.05 Sandown – IMPERIAL TROOPER (0.5pt e/w – 16/1 bet365)

Those drawn low were at a disadvantage in the soft-ground 7f York handicap won by Mirabeau last October and several horses beaten from the bottom half of the draw have won or run well in defeat since – third-placed Pellitory (stall 2 of 14) has seen his handicap mark rise from 82 to 104 after scoring on his next two starts, fifth-placed Prosperitas (stall 7) won at Newbury a couple of weeks later, eighth home Big Sip (stall 6) landed his next start (albeit at prohibitive odds), while Bear Code, who trailed home over 15 lengths back in a 150-1 thirteenth was just touched off when 50-1 ay Haydock on his comeback this term, his first run since York. IMPERIAL TROOPER had little chance from stall 3 that day, doing well to finish just over four lengths behind the winner in seventh, and his reappearance 12-1 sixth of 11 to Sex On Fire at Haydock was better than it looked as he raced prominently in a 1m handicap dominated by the late closers. Ed Walker’s three-year-old finished second by a head in a 7f nursery on his only previous course visit and, if front-running is the plan, he doesn’t look to face much competition for the early lead.

7.35 Sandown – PERSICA (0.5pt e/w – 20/1 generally)

PERSICA was out of his depth in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury last time, weakening into a 12-length last of eight after going hard on the front end. Richard Hannon’s four-year-old was a Group 3 winner at Newmarket on his penultimate start and has often bounced back from a defeat to score at the next time of asking. His record immediately following a loss reads 11411131 (6-8) for a profit of £24.00 to a £1 level stake at SP, improving to 11111 (5-5) when returned to the track within 28 days or his previous outing. He ran out a comfortable handicap winner over this trip on his only previous visit to Sandown, won’t mind if conditions ease and looks worth a back now back down to Group 3 level for the Brigadier Gerard Stakes.
