1.55 Goodwood – MAXIMIZED (1pt win – 5/1 bet365, William Hill, 9/2 generally)
It certainly helped to race near the stands’ side rail in the sprints here on Tuesday and with rain around on Thursday morning it could be the same again today. That’s good news for MAXIMIZED (stall 7 of 8) whose Woodcote win at Epsom suggests that the quirky nature of Goodwood will suit. That Epsom success came on good to soft going and it was fast enough for him when only fifth (6-4 favourite) to Zavateri in the Group 2 July Stakes at Newmarket on his latest outing. That form was franked when the winner and runner-up finished first/third in the Vintage Stakes here on Tuesday and the first-time cheekpieces could bring about improvement. Since 2016 his trainer is 29 from 92 with turf runners in this headgear (31.5%) for a profit of £44.28 to a £1 level stake at SP.
8.15 Wolverhampton – ROCK WALK (0.5pt e/w – 50/1 William Hill, three places, 40/1 generally with the firms paying four places)
ROCK WALK finished a respectable 33-1 eighth of 14 from off the pace in a 7f Doncaster handicap on his debut for Marco Botti, a trip that looked on the short side based on his form in the UAE. The switch to front-running tactics didn’t help at Newmarket in another 7f handicap next time where he trailed home last of the 12 runners when 100-1. His stall 11 of 12 draw was a huge disadvantage that day – he was one of only five to race on the far side – and other high-drawn runners have left their poor form well behind since. Two Tribes (stall 12), 12 lengths back in 11th place, finished third (6-1) and first (25-1) on his next two starts, tenth-placed Be Frank (stall 9) was third at Chester last weekend and seventh home Hickory (stall 8) finished a close-up third in a 17-runner line-up at Ascot on his latest outing. Stall 13 of 13 makes life difficult tonight but if connections decide to go from the front again, he should be able to get across and sit just behind likely leader MR SWIVELL. Whatever the tactics, there’s compensation in the huge price, and he’s worth a speculative interest.
8.45 Wolverhampton – ANDALEEP (1pt e/w – 8/1 generally with the firms paying four places)
ANDALEEP has a fine record in July and August, landing eight of his 25 starts for a profit of £46.71 to a £1 level stake at SP. When returned to the track within four weeks of a top-five last time out finish his record at this time of years reads 3211402111140192201 (8-19) for a profit of £52.71. He returned to winning ways with an 18-1 Racing League win at Yarmouth last week and was second from a bad draw in tonight’s race last year after prepping in the same Yarmouth contest.
