5.35 Chelmsford – SOVEREIGN BRIGHT (1pt win – 11/2 generally)

Charlie Johnston has a cracking record with two-year-old fillies on their debuts, especially on the all-weather. Since his name has been on the training licence the record is nine winners from 26 runners (34.6% strike-rate) for a profit of £86.00 to a £1 level stake at SP, improving to nine from 16 (+£96.00) over 5f-7f only. The qualifiers at Chelmsford recorded form figures of 111 (3-3), with the wins at 14-1, 12-1 and 5-2 (the beaten horse was a 28-1 shot). SOVEREIGN BRIGHT, well drawn in stall 2 for this 6f restricted fillies’ maiden, can hopefully make it four from four.

6.35 Chelmsford – WORD OF MOUTH (1pt win – 6/1 generally)

The James Ferguson-trained WORD OF MOUTH, well held on soft ground at Yarmouth last October on her sole juvenile outing, has shown plenty more on Tapeta this term, staying on in eye-catching fashion to finish a close-up 16-1 fifth of eight in a 1m fillies’ novice contest at Southwell in March before a 14-1 fourth over the same trip in a Newcastle fillies’ maiden. Her in-form handler has a good record with handicap debutants, scoring with 22 of the 103 qualifiers for a profit of £15.95 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 16.54, A/E = 1.33). The step up to 1m2f promises to suit and she’s worth a punt.

8.05 Leopardstown – AMPLITUDE (1pt win – 7/1 bet365, 13/2 generally)

AMPLITUDE caught the eye when sixth of 16 in a 7f auction maiden at Gowran Park in mid-April and did so again when fourth of 14 in a Ballinrobe maiden over the extended 1m1f trip on May 9th. Joseph Murphy’s three-year-old travelled well in midfield on the outside of the field and briefly took up the running on turning in before weakening in the final half furlong. He didn’t look totally straightforward, reportedly hanging left-handed throughout but looks very interesting now handicapping on a left-handed track. The cut back to 1m will suit and Gary Carroll returns to the saddle.
