7.45 Chelmsford – STAY WELL (1pt win – 9/1 William Hill)
STAY WELL bombed out at Newmarket on his reappearance last month, failing to settle and weakening into a 11th of 13 when 20-1 for a Class 2 handicap over the Cambridgeshire trip of 1m1f. However, that run was probably needed, and the big field wouldn’t have suited. Hughie Morrison’s six-year-old has shown a strong preference for small fields and splitting his runs by field size is very revealing…

He faces just six rivals today, drops down to Class 3 level and his three previous runs on Polytrack (all at Kempton) produced a win (six race), second by a head (ten ran) and a close-up third of 14.
8.45 Chelmsford – NELSON ROSE (0.5pt ew – 20/1 with bet365)
NELSON ROSE went into my tracker when fourth in a 7f maiden at Catterick last summer where she got into a duel for the early lead with Mr Irrelevant and helped to set the race up for the closers. She finished a length and a half in front of Mr Irrelevant that day and he has certainly boosted the form, scoring three times on turf this term, latterly off a mark of 77 at Hamilton on Sunday. Things haven’t gone quite as smoothly for Nelson Rose, who again did too much too soon when fifth at Epsom (9-4f) before defeats at York (albeit when 80-1 in Class 2 company), Kempton and Bath. Her recent comeback run over 1m at Kempton would have been needed and dropping back to 7f on a left-handed track could be just the ticket. She’s forecast to start at 20-1 and she’s worth a small each-way punt at 10-1+ having run well here on her second start last term (200-1 sixth of 12 behind the now 114-rated Starlust in maiden company).
