6.23 Leopardstown – JOHAN (1pt win – 9/2 bet365, 7/2 generally)
JOHAN needs a good break between his races and Jack Channon’s veteran clearly appreciated the 175-day layoff when making most of the running to land a 1m Class 2 Doncaster handicap at odds of 18-1 last September. This win took his record when rested for at last five months (155 days or longer) since his latest start to 11101 (4-5) for a huge profit of £73.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. His only subsequent 2025 outing saw him finish a respectable 19-1 third in a French Group 3 after an inadequate 43-day break and he looks worth a bet in another Group 3 contest now making his seasonal return after a 284-day absence. He reappeared at about this time of year in 2023, landing a Glorious Goodwood handicap at 25-1 and while the ground (officially good, good to firm in places) might be faster than preferred they’ve watered and there’s light rain forecast.
6.30 Chepstow – GREAT ACCLAIM (1pt win – 7/2 generally) & MUSICAL TOUCH (0.5pt e/w – 17/2 generally)
GREAT ACCLAIM clocked a very fast time when landing a 7f Glorious Goodwood handicap in first-time blinkers last week, a run that took his record over 7f or further on turf in May-August, after a recent outing (1-21 days), to 31161171 (5-8) for a profit of £38.25 to a £1 level stake at SP. Eve Johnson Houghton’s four-year-old has a useful record following a win, seems ideally served by tonight’s 7f trip and is potentially well drawn in stall 10.
MUSICAL TOUCH was an eyecatcher when third to Aleezdancer at Pontefract last month, doing best of those to come from off the pace (albeit from a favourable draw) and found his high draw insurmountable in a 6f Racing League handicap at Yarmouth next time, doing best of the centre/stands’ side bunch when a staying-on fourth (first four drawn 4, 1, 2 and 8 of 11, non-runner adjusted). Richard Fahey’s four-year-old ran well at York on his only previous start at tonight’s trip – finishing fifth of 22 – and looks worth a small each-way interest.
7.00 Chepstow – BE FRANK (1pt win – 8/1 bet365, 15/2 generally)
BE FRANK was only tenth of 12 in the Cracking Gold/Great Acclaim race at Newmarket on June 26th but was drawn on the wrong side of the track and did third best of the five runners to race far side. That race worked out well, with the runner-up reversing the form with the winner when they finished one-two at Glorious Goodwood, the third (Royal Velvet) winning at Newmarket next time, the badly-drawn seventh Hickory going close in a hot race at Ascot, the ninth (Aramis Grey) making the frame at 16-1 in Racing League company at Wolverhampton and the 11th (5-2 favourite Two Tribes) landing the International Stakes and Stewards’ Cup. BE Brank never got involved in apprentice handicap company Ascot next time when punted late from 9-1 into 11-2 but showed more when third at Chester a couple of weeks later, doing best of the closers in third. The big field/likely strong pace will suit and he’s worth another chance.
7.45 Sandown – TENNESSEE GOLD (1pt win – 11/2 bet365, 5/1 generally)
Last year’s winner TENNESSEE GOLD caught the attention of the stewards when never involved from a wide draw at Chelmsford on his comeback and was drawn on the wrong side of the track when eighth of 12 at Newmarket next time in a race that worked out well (see 7.00 Chepstow). Joseph Parr’s four-year-old has form figures of 1311 (3-4) when racing on right-handed tracks, improving to 11 (2-2) over tonight’s 7f trip only, and should get a good gallop to chase thanks to the presence of Padua and Lunario (main danger) who both made all when scoring on their latest outings.
8.00 Chepstow – BEYLERBEYI (1pt win – 7/2 generally)
One of my favourite betting systems is to back Ian Williams-trained last time out winners, after a very recent outing (eight days or less) when they run in a Flat handicap on turf. This century, the score is 31 from 70 (44.3% strike-rate) for a profit of £39.22 to a £1 level stake at SP and BEYLERBEYI, successful at York on July 26, was a qualifier on this angle when lining up at Newmarket last Saturday where he bolted up at odds of 9-4. The five-year-old has a cracking record in high summer (June to August), recording form figures of 31113850311 (5-11) for a profit of £16.63 to a £1 level stake at SP and looks worth a bet to defy a 5lb penalty. LIEBER POWER has a good record in August and looks the one for the forecast.
8.30 Chepstow – FREDDY ROBINSON (0.5pt e/w – 33/1 generally with the firms paying four places)
The consistent FREDDY ROBINSON has made the frame in his last four starts and looks worth a small each-way interest in this 1m2f contest. Brian Ellison’s six-year-old has won just once from 25 starts on the Flat but five of those came on the all-weather (he’s more effective on turf). He hasn’t finished worse than fourth on turf since October 2022 and 7lb claimer Shay Farmer’s turf mounts show a profit when backed blind (13 from 93, +£78.03).

Andrew’s Angles – Soft Ground Sires for When Summer Weather Turns
The British weather has taken a turn for the worse in the past few days (as it usually does when hosepipe bans are introduced) and we saw thunderstorms turn the ground soft at Windsor on Monday night and Beverley raced on officially heavy going. Windsor’s muddy track produced some bookmaker friendly results (33-1 and 14-1…
