4.10 Chester – LOYAL TOUCH (1pt ew – 10/1 William Hill)
LOYAL TOUCH (stall 4 of 12) looks the pace angle in this extended 1m2f handicap and Charlie Johnston’s gelding will be happier at this venue than at Newcastle where he did well to finish a close second in a 1m2f handicap on his latest start. It remains extremely difficult to make all on the round course (distances of 1m2f+) on Newcastle’s Tapeta surface, so to go down by just a neck behind the progressive Aerospace under a forcing ride was a fine effort, especially as he allowed the winner to grab the favoured near side rail. He’d won narrowly over the same track and trip on his penultimate start and Jason Hart takes over from 7lb claimer Ashley Young. His three runs since returning to the Johnston yard from Jack Channon’s care have all come on the all-weather but he clocked a good time when sixth of 14 in a Heritage Handicap at York on his latest turf outing and the return to grass won’t inconvenience him.
7.00 Chelmsford – LAKOTA SPIRIT (1pt win – 5/2 bet365)
D Flawless has been put in as the 10-11 favourite for this restricted maiden fillies’ stakes based on her narrow debut defeat at Kempton but there are mixed messages from that form and this race looks more competitive than the early market suggests. The interesting one is Richard Hannon’s LAKOTA SPIRIT, who has shaped well in both starts to date. The daughter of Sioux Nation finished a highly respectable 18-1 fifth of 14 at Leicester on her sole juvenile start before finding only the William Haggas-trained Sunfall too good at Kempton on last month’s three-year-old bow. Her sire’s progeny have a good record in small fields and has a fitness advantage over her main market rival.
