1.30 Fontwell – BRULURE NOIRE (1pt win – 9/2 William Hill, 4/1 generally)
The Richard Bandey-trained BRULURE NOIRE made a winning reappearance in a 2m handicap chase at Ffos Last in November 2022 and returned 12 months later to land the same race, again on his seasonal return. He signed off last term with a 2m3.5f handicap chase win at Chepstow in mid-April when freshened up after a 51-day break and first-time out could be when to catch him. I’d rather have bet him at Ffos Las rather than at this sharper venue, but his intended comeback race (last Monday) was abandoned and his good record when fresh is persuasive.

7.00 Southwell – THURSO (1pt win) & BALOO’S BLUES (0.5pt win)
THURSO could only finish seventh of ten at Lingfield on last month’s debut but the 16-1 chance met trouble after trying to make ground in the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail and that run was better than his finishing position implied. Richard Hughes’ son of Dutch Art has had wind surgery (presumably a very minor procedure given the absence of just 19 days) and it’s interesting to note that his sire’s progeny are five from 20 following a wind operation for a profit of £29.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. He can take a big step forward in a race lacking representatives from the top yards.
The Charles Hills-trained BALOO’S BLUES was too green to do himself justice when 25-1 for a 7f Newmarket maiden on November 1st, finishing 14 lengths behind the winner in tenth. Fourth-placed Charming Life did nothing for the form at Lingfield next time (though that run was too bad to be true and he reportedly twisted a shoe) but the fifth, Nobel Champion, won a Lingfield novice by five and a half lengths on his next start and the seventh, Merchant, was short-headed in a 1m novice at Newcastle. Baloo’s Blues was only four lengths behind that rival and his trainer is 18 from 66 here (27.3%) since the start of 2021 for a profit of £79.95. He’s worth a saver.

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Front Runners Are Strongly Favoured at Leicester
We are often told that certain tracks favour front-runners, but hurdle and chase courses can ride very differently, and we can’t always group these races together when considering the ideal running style for a particular venue. Leicester is a case in point, and I want to use this article to examine what’s required to win…
