5.40 Hamilton – FORTUNATE STAR (1.5pt win – 3/1 generally)

FORTUNATE STAR has improved since fitted with a tongue-tie, bolting up by three lengths at Haydock before his nose second at Doncaster in a race that is working out well. It’s safe to ignore his subsequent mid-division effort in a novelty race at York and while yet to win on a stiff track he showed more here in maiden company. At the time of writing HAPPIER was trading as favourite on the strength of her last time out Catterick win but Tim Easterby’s handicappers have a poor record when bidding to follow up and she looks too short in the betting.

7.10 Hamilton – DANGER BAY (1pt win – 4/1 Betway, Paddy Power, 7/2 generally)

I’m happy to oppose NOBLE HORIZON in this 1m1f handicap as William Haggas’ three-year-old has been priced up more on his trainer’s reputation than what he has achieved on the racecourse. The son of Kingman was beaten at odds of 9-2, 11-8f, 2-1 and 8-15f prior to justifying 2-9 favouritism on fast ground in novice company at Leicester last time and the slower ground might not be ideal. WAVE RIDER (main danger) has been well found in the early market after his eye-catching third against the bias at Yarmouth last time, but the bet is DANGER BAY, who recorded a useful time when landing a course and distance maiden on his latest start. New Bay progeny tend to hold their form well and simply backing those who finished in the top three last time out found 215 winners from 858 bets (25.1%) for a profit of £110.39 to a £1 level stake at SP. Throw in trained Ed Bethell’s solid record with handicap debutants on turf (those aged three or older are 16 from 64 for profit of £14.34) and he looks the value among the front three in the betting.
