3.12 Beverley – OPAL STORM (1pt e/w – 5/1 generally)
OPAL STORM only just lost out on third place when a 50-1 fourth on this race 12 months ago, a run that might have been needed on her debut for Brian Rothwell and return from a 229-day absence. The five-year-old caught the eye when fifth at Pontefract last month, doing best of those to come from off the pace, and built on that with a 9-1 half-length runner-up effort at Doncaster. The return to this stiff track will suit, she’s only 1lb higher this time around and holds solid each-way claims.
4.12 Beverley – CANGOFAR (1pt e/w – 12/1 generally)
ZAPPATA, who bids for a five-timer in this 1m2f handicap, will be a tough nut to crack but is priced accordingly and the angle is to play Tim Easterby’s CANGOFAR at an each-way price. The three-year-old could only seventh of eight at Redcar on his recent return to action but that run would have been needed and he was ridden patiently in a race where it paid to be prominent. It was also his first start since a gelding operation and his yard has a useful record with runners having their second start after the procedure, with the handicappers landing 21 of their 190 starts since 2012 for a profit of £21.95. In the spring (March to May) only, the score is 16 from 101 for a profit of £51.45. The last two qualifiers – 4/5 favourite Candonomore at Leicester on Saturday and 7-1 chance Flickering Halo at Newcastle on Sunday (from 25-1) – both won after strong market support and the son of Almanzor is worth a punt to get the hat-trick up. He clocked a useful speed figure according to Proform for that Redcar run (the third best last time out figure in today’s line-up), despite beating only one home.
5.35 Worcester – HEY MISTER DJ (1pt win, 9/2 generally)
Barry Brennan has a good record at the second time of asking with horses he takes over from other yards, scoring with 13 of the 131 qualifiers for a profit of £7.00 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 7.60, A/E = 1.71), with those who finished in the top three on their stable debut winning eight from 31 for a profit of £46.00. HEY MISTER DJ clocked a respectable time when a 28-1 second to even-money favourite He’s A Latchico at Fontwell last month and can go one better.

Andrew’s Angles – How to Make the Best of Racing in May
One recurring theme in the hugely entertaining Barstewards Enquiry podcast concerns trainer Charles Hills and how his runners tend to go off the boil from the end of June. I thought I’d used this week’s column to check this out and to look for other trainers whose runners typically perform well in the first half…
