2.40 Nottingham – GLORY FIGHTER (1pt win – 4/1 generally) + 0.5pt reversed forecast GLORY FIGHTER/ABATE
There’s plenty of early pace on offer in this 5f Class 5 handicap, despite the small field, especially from last week’s July festival 40-1 fifth JACQUELINA, RECON MISSION and HURT YOU NEVER. Throw in the forecast headwind and the key to this race is who can get cover in the early stages. I was expecting to side with ABATE who caught the eye when runner-up from a poor wide draw at Lingfield on his recent debut for George Baker but is chance is well covered in offers of around 2-1 and I’ve jumped ship to Paul Midgley’s GLORY FIGHTER. The veteran caught the eye when fifth of 17 against the track bias at Doncaster on his turf return in late March and won over course and distance a couple of runs later. He trailed home last of seven under Fred Daly at Haydock on his latest assignment, but the draw played a crucial role that day, despite the small field, with the three widest-drawn runners filling the last three places. Regular pilot Mark Winn is back on board today and his yard does well at this venue, with their Class 4 or lower handicap runners landing 16 of their 66 starts since the beginning of 2021 for a profit of £39.38 to a £1 level stake at SP. I’ve backed him to win and will also bet the Abate/Glory Fighter reversed forecast.
