1.50 Newmarket = THE BIG BOARD (1pt win – 9/1 bet365)
1.50 Newmarket – TEES SPIRIT (1pt win – 11/1 bet365)
THE BIG BOARD won at Leicester on her reappearance last term (6f, good to firm) and later added 5f wins at Doncaster (good to firm) and Ascot (good to soft). Richard Hannon’s four-year-old beat only one home in the Portland Handicap at Doncaster on her final 2023 outing but had no chance from stall 21 of 22 as she raced on the near side when the faster strip of ground was down the centre, favouring those with middle draws (first four drawn 12, 13, 8 and 6). The market might have over-reacted to that performance, and she can bounce back now freshened up.
I also want to side with TEES SPIRIT, another who was drawn out of it when down the field in the Portland, finishing 17th from stall 22. The Adrian Nicholls-trained six-year-old did too much too soon when down the field at Ascot on his final start last term and he won at the first time of asking in 2021 and 2022.
2.20 Newmarket – BREAK THE BANK (2pt win – 11/2 bet365)
BREAK THE BANK overcame a slow start to score over 1m at Kempton last month on his first start since a gelding operation and could well be up to defying an 8lb rise now returned to turf. His turf debut sixth (beaten by less than 5L) behind the now 107-rated Macduff on the July Course suggests today’s surface won’t be an issue and his trainer has a good record with horses having their second start since gelded – he’s won 28 of the 108 qualifiers (25.9%) for a profit of £15.70, with those who ran last time out landing ten of their 19 starts for a profit of £19.41.
5.15 Newmarket – RUNAROUND SIOUX (2pt win – 8/1 bet365)
Progeny of the sire Sioux Nation seem happiest in smallish fields, landing 83 of their 458 starts (18.1% strike-rate) in fields of ten or fewer runners for a profit of £68.81 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 68.87, A/E = 1.21). In larger line-ups they’re just 23 from 387 (5.9%) for a loss of £200.98. I tipped the Rod Millman-trained RUNAROUND SIOUX in this column when she was successful (5-1 from 10-1) over 6f at Chelmsford in February, and she emerged clear best of those to come from off the pace when a 9-1 fourth over the same course and distance last time. After her Chelmsford win, I had a good chat with assistant trainer James Millman who said he was very much looking forward to seeing her over a straight course on turf. She gets those conditions today and looks worth a good best in this nine-runner contest.
7.30 Newcastle – BROTHER DAVE (1pt win – 4/1 bet365)
BROTHER DAVE has taken off this year since returned to 7f and Tapeta, recording form figures of 22311 (2-5), with both wins at Southwell. Ruth Carr’s four-year-old, a half-brother to the same yard’s late-maturing Booby Joe Leg, could have further improvement to come and I like his draw in stall 4 as the pace is nearby in stalls 1 and 3. He’s yet to win here but has placed on his last two visits, including a half-length 22-1 second.
