4.00 Brighton – ANGEL ON HIGH (1pt win – 11/4 bet365) & LONG CALL (1pt win – 7/1 bet365)
The two three-year-olds who line up in this 1m2f Class 6 handicap are both maidens and may not be able to take advantage of the 7lb weight-for-age allowance. I’m going to back two of the remaining four runners – ANGEL ON HIGH and LONG CALL. The first-named could only finish sixth of eight when 15-8 favourite at Bath last time (1m3.5f) but he raced keenly in rear after missing the break and a clean start today should allow him to revert to his usual prominent style. His two runs over course and distance have produced a 3-1 win and a half-length second at odds of 13-2 and the return to this venue will suit.
LONG CALL is well into the veteran stage but can usually be relied upon to run his race at this time of year, recording form figures in August/September of 70613131199357412504 (5-20) for a profit of £18.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. He needs a strong pace, so is probably reliant on Charlie Johnston’s Mon Etoile reverting to front-running tactics and taking on Angel On High for the lead, but he’s worth chancing at the available odds.
7.20 Roscommon – BELLA COLOMBIA (0.5pt ew – 12/1 Paddy Power/Betfair)
BELLA COLOMBIA has drawn a blank in six starts since causing a 25-1 upset at Dundalk on her racecourse debut last August but has often been highly tried. She was shoved up to Group 3 level for her turf debut just 11 days after Dundalk, going down by just over five lengths behind Letsbefrankaboutit, before two runs in Listed company, struggling in both. She didn’t show much over 5f at the Curragh on her handicap debut in June but the step up to 7f brought improvement at Naas the following month where she finished a two-length 28-1 fourth and she built on that with a 25-1 fourth in a 1m Curragh handicap on August 10th. That run was worthy of an upgrade as the tailwind made life tough for her patient style and she actually fared best of the closers. Today’s big field will help, and she looks worth a small each-way interest.

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Do ‘Gambling Yards’ Still Exist or Are They in the Past?
The world of horse racing no longer allows for the old-fashioned skulduggery that used to pervade the sport. However, in this week’s Myth Busters column, Andrew Mount asks whether “gambling yards” still exist, ones which love to land a touch with a well-backed favourite. When I first became interested in horse racing some stables were…
