3.40 Nottingham – GREAT CHIEFTAIN (1pt win – 7/1 bet365 William Hill, 888Sport, 13/2 generally)
It paid to race handily in the 1m Epsom handicap won by Portsmouth on April 23rd and GREAT CHIEFTAIN caught the eye in finishing a 12-1 fifth of 11 from a midfield sit in first-time blinkers. The Paul & Oliver Cole-trained three-year-old fared second best of those to come from midfield or further back, finishing just behind Mr Baloo who was best of the closers. Mr Baloo won at 7-1 on his next start and the patiently-ridden seventh, outsider-of-the-field Whathappensinvegas (40-1), caused a 25-1 upset at Newmarket last Saturday. The Cole yard does well when taking blinkers off a runner who wore them for the first time on their latest outing (22 from 132 this century, 16.7%, +£71.12 to a £1 level stake at SP). The cheekpieces go on today and he’s worth a punt.
4.40 – Nottingham – LADY BANCROFT (1pt ew – 22/1 888Sport, Paddy Power, 20-1 generally)
Ralph Beckett has a cracking record with his runners in first-time blinkers, scoring with 30 of the 156 qualifiers since the beginning of 2016 (19.2%) for a profit of £89.60 to a £1 level stake at SP. Only two were fully owned by Amo Racing and both win (16-1 and 8-1). LADY BANCROFT didn’t show much on her turf debut at Windsor last month but the switch to handicap company for the first time could bring about improvement.
