1.50 Perth – SCORPIO RISING (1pt win – 7/2 bet365)
SCORPIO RISING has caught the eye against pace biases in both previous outings and is taken to get off the mark in this maiden hurdle. Olly Murphy’s five-year-old fared best of the closers when third in a soft-ground bumper at Exeter in January and also emerged best of those to come from the rear when filling the same position in a Ffos Las maiden hurdle in April. Both performances were backed up the clock and he’s likely to prove hard to beat under Sean Bowen.
3.00 Perth – KINGSTON PRIDE (1pt win – 5/2 Sky Bet, Paddy Power)
I wrote up KINGSTON PRIDE in my column in Racing & Football Outlook after his debut run in a Polytrack bumper at Lingfield in January 2024. Nicky Henderson’s 8-11 favourite raced in the deep stuff on the inside rail and did really well to finish second, just over one length behind Fergal O’Brien’s Tripoli Flyer (re-opposes today) who challenged late and wide under a typical Paddy Brennan ride. He’s only raced four times subsequently because of a preference for decent going (he’s been declared a non-runner on no less than five occasions), recording form figures of 11P1 (3-4), with the wins on officially good ground and the non-completion on soft. He changed hands for £285,000 in the spring and I’m trusting new handler Olly Murphy to pull him of this beginners’ chase if the ground is too soft. TRIPOLI FLYER heads he betting (11-10 favourite at the time of writing) but he’s been beaten on both previous seasonal debuts before winning second time out and he might just need this.
