3.55 Epsom – WESTERN STARS (0.5pt ew – 14/1 bet365, William Hill)
The pace held up in the 1m2f Betfred “Hat Trick Heaven” Handicap at Newmarket last November, with the 20-1 winner Laafi making all from First Officer (‘prominent’) and Mexicali Rose (‘prominent’). WESTERN STARS did well to finish just under six lengths back in fifth of the 15 runners after blowing the start and won on Lingfield’s Polytrack the following month. Jim Boyle’s four-year-old has form figures on turf for his current yard of 231165 (2-6) and will come on for last month’s Lingfield all-weather spin on his return from a three-month break.
5.05 Epsom – MR BALOO (1.5pt win – 7/1 generally)
There are plenty of potential improvers in this 8.5f handicap but I’m going to keep it simple and side with the more exposed MR BALOO who took his record beyond spring trips to 1131 (3-4) when arriving late to land a 7f handicap at Kempton on his recent return from a six-month break. He’s only gone up 2lb for that run, has a course win to his name and will hopefully be ridden patiently again in a race likely to be run at a strong gallop. The step up in trip could bring about further improvement.
