2.47 Beverley – PARK STREET (1pt win, 7-1 888Sport, 13/2 generally)
Three-year-olds have struggled in this race in recent years, with just one such winner in the past nine renewals. George Boughey’s three-year-old Giorgio M dominates the early market at around the 9-4 mark and could be worth taking on. He got off the mark against his own age group in a small field at Musselburgh (7f, good) on his penultimate start but was beaten at Newmarket next time, albeit over 6f. The speed figures I use have him last of 11 in this 7.5f handicap and I’d rather side with one of the older horses. Step forward last year’s winner PARK STREET, who ran a blinder over course and distance on his recent reappearance, finishing second of 13 at 12-1. His last three course runs on good or faster going have retuned form figures of 112 (2-3), he clocked a fast time for that comeback effort, and he should get the race set up for his closing style thanks to the presence of front-runner Island Native and one or two others who like to press the pace.
7.15 Newbury – FLYING SECRET (1pt win – 11/1 bet365, 10/1 generally)
I had expected FLYING SECRET to perform well at Chepstow on June 8th, as he was running over a straight 7f on fast ground, the conditions he scored under twice in June of last year (at Newbury and Yarmouth). However, Eve Johnson Houghton’s five-year-old raced keenly in the first-time cheekpieces and could only finish a 12-1 sixth of 11. The headgear is dispensed with today and the return to a flat track will suit.
