2.10 Beverley – STAR START (1pt win – 9/1 bet365)
I know it’s day one of Glorious Goodwood, but I can’t resist a punt on STAR START in this 1m2f amateur riders’ handicap. Ruth Carr’s five-year-old is well drawn in stall 1 and was a huge eyecatcher when a 9-1 fourth at Catterick last time. The front-runners went off way too hard that day and he did really well to finish only three and a half lengths back after being described as “took keen hold, pressed leader on inner, led after 4f” behind the three hold-up horses who were last, second last and third last on turning in. He also ran well against the pace bias when sixth at Pontefract on his penultimate start, doing second best of those to race up with the pace. Fourth-placed Louie The Legend, best of the prominent racers, won well at Nottingham next time.
2.30 Goodwood – IBERIAN (0.5pt e/w – 25/1 generally, bet365, Sky Bet and Paddy Power paying four places)
There’s plenty of early pace in the Group 2 Lennox Stakes and the race is likely to be set up for a closer. This has often been the case and five of the past ten winners had a Proform pace rating of zero (which means that they had been ridden patiently in their last three starts). Backing all 25 qualifiers would have returned a profit of £49.00 to a £1 level stake at SP and this year’s four are Kinross, Lake Forest, Intrusively and IBERIAN. The last-named has form figures below Group 1 level of 121128 (3-6), with the eighth-place excusable as he missed the break when beaten by four lengths in the Group 2 Greenlands Stakes at the Curragh. His latest 50-1 fifth of 14 in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Royal Ascot was a solid effort and the step back up to 7f won’t harm his chances.
3.05 Goodwood – SWEET WILLIAM (1pt e/w – 10/1 bet365, 9/1 generally)
I thought SWEET WILLIAM had a great chance of finishing in the first three in the Ascot Gold Cup last month but John & Thady Gosden’s six-year-old, usually ridden patiently, sat too close to the early pace and weakened into fourth. That was the first time in his 17-race career that he hadn’t finished in the first three and a return to patient tactics should see him finish thereabouts. The return to this track will suit – his two runs here have a produced a 1m6f handicap win and a runner-up effort to Kyprios in this race last year.
3.45 Goodwood – REDORANGE (1pt e/w – 5/1 generally, bet365, Sky Bet and Paddy Power paying six places) & DREAM COMPOSER (0.5pt e/w – 20/1 generally)
REDORANGE did this column a favour when winning well backed at Chester’s May meeting and followed that with a fine third in the Palace Of Holyrood House Stakes at Royal Ascot, doing best of those drawn low who raced on the far side. Clive Cox’s three-year-old also ran well from a bad draw in another 5f handicap last time, again emerging best of those drawn low and best of those to come from off the pace when a three-quarters of a length fourth of 17 to Alzahir. He’s yet to finish out of the frame in seven starts since his racecourse debut and looks set to run a big race.
DREAM COMPOSER ran another solid race on an undulating track when we backed him at Pontefract the other day, going down by three-quarters of a length in second to Dan Tucker. Trainer James Evans (quoted in the Racing Post) after the gelding’s win at Epsom on Derby Day last year – said “He’s pretty good at going up and down dale, because he’s won at Goodwood and places like that.” The six-year-old scored at Kempton back in June 2021 but his other nine wins have all come on turf tracks described as stiff and/or undulating, namely Carlisle, Pontefract (twice), Goodwood (twice), Ascot, Newmarket, Sandown and Epsom. Stall 7 might not be ideal given that most of the pace in centre/stands side’ but he’s still worth a small interest.

Andrew’s Angles – Soft Ground Sires for When Summer Weather Turns
The British weather has taken a turn for the worse in the past few days (as it usually does when hosepipe bans are introduced) and we saw thunderstorms turn the ground soft at Windsor on Monday night and Beverley raced on officially heavy going. Windsor’s muddy track produced some bookmaker friendly results (33-1 and 14-1…
