2.58 Goodwood – MARCHING MAC (0.5pt e/w – 12-1 generally)
MARCHING MAC is what I call a T.OY. (time of year) bet and now is the time to side with Phil Mcentee’s four-year-old. He’s lost all 12 starts from January until the end of August but has form figures from September 1st until the end of the year of 124121115 (5-9) for a profit of £38.70 to a £1 level stake at SP. On turf only, the score is five from seven, including two victories on heavy going. It’s soft, good to soft in places at Goodwood today and he’ll handle underfoot conditions better than most.
8.45 Wolverhampton – ELDEYAAR (25-1 Paddy Power, Betfair) & RADIANT ANGEL (14-1 bet365, 12-1 generally)
Like yesterday’s Windsor winner Yorkshire Lady (25-1), ELDEYAAR often comes good at this time of year and has form figures in September of 61111341 (5-8) for a profit of £30.83 to a £1 level stake at SP. Antony Brittain’s six-year-old is just one from 45 in other months (loss of £42.50), with that victory coming in mid-August. He looked on his way back when a 22-1 fifth of ten at Thirsk last time and I can’t let him go unbacked, despite the wide draw and the presence of two other pacesetters (Nordic Glory and Coast).
Without that front-running pair I’d have gone 1pt e/w or even 2pts win on Eldeyaar but there is a chance that they go too fast and set it up for a closer. For that reason, I also want to play hold-up horse RADIANT ANGEL, who will appreciate the likely strong pace. She’s hardly prolific but her sole success (from 20 starts) came off a strong pace over tonight’s course and distance for the same jockey and she’s likely to be finishing to good effect.
