1.50 Goodwood – DUAL IDENTITY (1pt ew – 16/1 bet365, William Hill)
DUAL IDENTITY hasn’t won away from Sandown since May 2022, but it would be unwise to label him as a ‘one course horse’. William Knight’s six-year-old has only visited Goodwood once before, finishing a respectable 11 of 20 against the pace/draw bias when 50-1 for the Golden Mile last year, and his sire (Belardo) gets plenty of Goodwood winners – backing Belardo progeny here on good or faster going would have found four winners from 17 bets for a profit of £37.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. Dual Identity arrives here on the back of a 22-1 ninth of 20 at York, a run that was better than it looked as he fared third best of those drawn very high. Stall 3 should allow this hold-up performer to get plenty of cover in the early stages and he’s sure to be finishing to good effect.
3.00 Goodwood – ENGLISH OAK (1.5pt win – 7/2 William Hill, bet365)
3.00 Goodwood – CHICAGO CRITIC (0.5pt win – 16/1 generally)
Four of the eight participants – Pogo, Art Power, Noble Dynasty and Audience – in this year’s Lennox Stakes like to make the running and it’s hard to escape the conclusion that the race will be set up for a closer. This leaves us with a shortlist of last year’s winner Kinross, Buckingham Palace Stakes winner ENGLISH OAK, Tiber Flow and CHICAGO CRITIC. It’s rare for a horse who prepped in handicap company to win this Group 2 contest but very few with realistic chances have tried and Ed Walker’s English Oak had three lengths to spare over his nearest rival when scoring at Royal Ascot. That took his record this season to 211 (2-3) and his trainer remains in fine form. Jersey Stakes third Chicago Critic improved for a gelding operation to land a 1m Naas handicap in May and followed that with a fine 80-1 third from off the pace in the Jersey Stakes. That form has received a few knocks, but the pace scenario is ideal and he’s worth a saver.
5.20 Goodwood – ARISAIG (1pt ew – 11/2 generally)
ARISAIG clocked a fast time when a four-length third to Asian Daze at Newmarket last time and though beaten by four lengths she was three and a half lengths clear of the fourth. Charlie Johnston’s filly is well drawn in stall 3 and, since this race’s inception, backing those who arrived here on the back of a top-three finish, who had raced within the past 21 days, would have found seven of the eight winners (from 39 bets) for a profit of £10.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. The booking of Jamie Spencer tells us how she’s going to be ridden and, while she’ll need luck in running, it will be hugely disappointing if she doesn’t hit the frame.
