3.05 Ffos Las – FERNANDO (0.5pt ew – 50/1 bet365)
I’ve long been a fan of backing Ed Walker’s juveniles on their second career start and my go-to system is to side with the ones who were beaten but ran within five lengths of the winner on their debuts. This angle has found 26 winners from 79 bets (32.9% strike-rate) for a profit of £29.65 to a £1 level stake at SP, including three from four so far this year (the other was second at 4-1). Prior to the start of the current season, those who were beaten by more than five lengths on their debuts usually struggled, landing 14 of their 166 starts at the second time of asking (8.4%) for a loss of £71.03 but 2024 has been different, with three winners (11-1, 10-1 and 13-2) from four qualifiers (the other was fourth at 28-1). FERNANDO blew the start and ran green on his way to an 11-1 ninth of 13 (beaten by 12 lengths) at Salisbury on his debut last month and while his yard has gone quiet after a golden spell in early summer, he’s worth a small each-way interest.
5.20 Ffos Las – MUJID (1pt ew – 8/1 bet365)
MUJID could only finish fourth of seven over 1m6f here last time, but he didn’t encounter the required strong pace and today’s race should be run to suit. There are three regular front-runners in opposition – PENALTY SHOOTOUT, KNIGHT TEMPLAR and THE PUG in addition to two runners in first-time headgear, who could be ridden more prominently than usual. Joe Tickle’s nine-year-old won’t be inconvenienced by the cut back in trip – he was competitive over 1m at Windsor just three runs back – and his course record reads 31314 (2-5).

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Are Trainers too Set in Their Ways or Can a Leopard Change its Spots?
