We’ve had horses aged 13, 11 and ten land this 3m5f handicap chase in recent renewals and 11-year-old COURT MASTER is taken to defy the ageing process. The veteran shaped well at Cheltenham last month on his 173-day break absence, finishing a 25-1 sixth of 14 in a competitive Class 2 handicap chase over the 3m2f trip. The drop to Class 3 company could be the key today – his record over fences in this grade or lower reads 111411U5 (5-8) for a profit of £16.58 to a £1 level stake at SP.
5.12 Southwell – ERNEST GREY (1.5pt win – 11/4 bet365, 5/2 generally)
The Alan King-trained ERNEST GREY has a good record in small fields and was a gutsy winner from the front over course and distance on January 17th. The seven-year-old can be forgiven his modest fourth in a novices’ handicap chase at Kempton next time as he jumped out to his left on the right-handed track, and he appreciated the return to a left-handed course when going down by just one length in second place at Doncaster on his latest outing. He clocked a good speed figure for that effort (according to Proform’s ratings) and the good ground is in his favour.
