3.07 Huntingdon – KOTTAYAM (1pt win – 9/1 bet365, 7/1 William Hill)
Chelmsford all-weather expert CARLTON heads the betting for this 2m3.5f handicap hurdle but he usually struggles when asked to race away from the Essex venue and has only won once from 22 starts on turf (Flat and jumps combined). That sole success came at Southwell in June on his latest hurdles assignment, but he was again unconvincing in the jumping department and was sent off as the 8-11 favourite in an uncompetitive novice handicap. I’d rather take a chance on KOTTAYAM on her debut for Dylan Cunha. The five-year-old hardly set the world alight in five starts under Rules for Patrick Neville but placed twice in maiden hurdle company and looks a likely improver now handicapping for her new yard. Cunha does well at the first time of asking with horses he takes over from other yards, with the handicappers landing six of their 26 starts for a profit of £25.13 to a £1 level stake at SP. Only one of those came over jumps – Mahons Glory, another ex-Neville inmate and successful at 16-1 in a Leicester handicap chase on his stable debut in March of this year.
4.30 Leicester – MANILA SCOUSE (1pt win – 8/1 generally, 15/2 William Hill, bet365)
MANILA SCOUSE tends to perform best in smallish fields (11 or fewer runners) and after a recent outing (within 14 days), recording form figures under such conditions of 13114461721 (5-11) for a profit of £22.98 to a £1 level stake at SP. Tim Easterby’s six-year-old, drawn out of it when down the field in the Ayr Bronze Cup on his penultimate start, showed much more when fourth of 12 at Ripon ten days ago, only succumbing to the closers in the last half-furlong of that 6f Class 3 handicap. He drops in trip and grade today and is back on an official rating of 79 – his last winning handicap mark.
