2.10 Pontefract – SUPREME DANCER (2pt win – 11/2 bet365)
SUPREME DANCER was only sixth of nine at Carlisle on his latest start but that was in the Class 2 novice contest won by Sands Of Spain and he started at 80-1 his third qualifying run for a handicap mark. Richard Fahey’s coly was also ridden patiently in a race dominated by early pace and the fourth-placed finisher Dandy Style, who also came from the rear, won at Thirsk last week when advised in this column. Throw in subsequent victories for the winner, runner-up and third and an opening handicap mark of 61 looks generously low. The step up to 6f should suit.
3.10 Pontefract – JULIA AUGUSTA (1pt win – 12/1 bet365, 11/1 William Hill)
There have been several recent upsets in the Pipalong Stakes and backing all of the 89 runners in this 1m Listed contest for fillies and mares in the past ten years would have returned a profit of £24.00 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£51.10 at Betfair SP after 2% commission). Of course, I’m not suggesting that as a betting strategy in this year’s renewal though it makes me more inclined to suggest throwing a dart at JULIA AUGUSTA at a double-figure price. David O’Meara’s mare fared best of those ridden patiently when a 40-1 third to Mirsky at Epsom on Oaks Day and, as mentioned before Tribal Rhythm’s admittedly modest effort at Sandown last Saturday, several other hold-up horses form that race have performed with credit since. Julia Augusta was only tenth of 23 in the Kensington Palace Stakes on her next outing, but she did best of the handful of runners who raced far side and ran partially shod. Arisaig second best of those drawn very low when 14th that day, boosted the form when second at Sandown on Saturday. The tongue-tie goes on for the first time today and progeny of Ulysees have done well in this headgear, landing six of their 37 starts for a profit of £25.38 to a £1 level stake at SP.
5.00 Lingfield – ALL WAYS GLAMOROUS (1pt win – 2/1 bet365)
ALL WAYS GLAMOROUS, only eighth of 11 when favourite for a 5f Class 4 handicap at Sandown earlier this month, bounced back to land a Class 5 contest by just over three lengths from Level Up on June 23rd and that form was boosted when the runner-up went one better at Leicester 72 hours later. Chris Mason’s four-year-old has form figures at the minimum trip of 222412181 (3-9) and looks worth backing to follow up, despite returning to Class 4 level. His trainer has done well with this family and backing the dam’s (Go Glamorous) runners over 5f would have found 15 winners from 71 bets for a profit of £33.33 to a £1 level stake at SP.
8.00 Uttoxeter – GETAWAY JEWEL (1pt win – 3/1 bet365) & DEXTER (1pt win – 9/2 bet365)
There are two interesting runners in this 2m handicap chase and I’m happy to back both. GETAWAY JEWEL performs best at this time of year, recording form figures over fences in June/July of 4111641 (4-7), including a five-length Fakenham victory last time out.
The other one I want to support is DEXTER on his debut for Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero. His new yard is five from 19 with stable switchers in handicap chases for a profit of £42.50 to a £1 level stake at SP, with three of the last four qualifiers winning. The eight-year-old, ex-Sophie Leech, has had a wind operation since pulling up on heavy ground at Newton Abbot in the spring and will appreciate this better ground.
