2.42 York – GLENFINNAN (1pt win – 18/1 bet365, 16/1 generally)
The Michael Dods-trained GLENFINNAN (stall 11 of 16) made a pleasing return to action when 11th of 19 behind Dark Thirty at Doncaster’s Lincoln meeting and, coincidentally, he finished in mid-division (12th of 18) behind the same rival on his 2023 reappearance before winning at the second time of asking. Dods has a good record at York’s May meeting with runners having their second start back after a break of 100 days or longer, scoring with five of the 36 runners for a profit of £22.33 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 2.55, A/E = 1.96). He’s three from ten at the 6f trip (+£37.00), including the winner of this race in 2022, 18-1 chance Dakota Gold. Glenfinnan has yet to race here for his current yard but ran second of 17 in the 2022 Convivial maiden (7f) for Andrew Balding. The five-year-old can sometimes compromise his chance by racing keenly but the booking of Rossa Ryan for the first time could suggest a more prominent ride and in a race lacking obvious pace angles (except perhaps for all-weather expert We Never Stop) I’m hoping that he attempts to make all.
3.13 York – ELITE STATUS (2pt win – 4/1 William Hill, Ladbrokes, Coral)
ELITE STATUS beat only one home in the Group 1 Champion Sprint Stakes at Ascot last October on his final 2024 outing but had excuses (poor draw/unsuitably soft going) and tends to come to hand early – his record on his first two runs each season reads 1111 (4-4), as compared to figures of 317880 (1-6) on his third of subsequent runs. Four-year-old colts have a fine record in this Group 2 contest and while he’s the owner’s second string behind INISHERIN (a potential improver after wind surgery) there’s compensation at the current prices.
