I’M NEXT improved significantly for a gelding operation when an 80-1 third of nine at Beverley in September and built on that with an 18-1 fourth at Ripon where he didn’t quite see out the 6f trip on soft ground. Tim Easterby’s son of Ardad returns to the minimum trip for his nursery debut today and looks capable of further improvement.

4.50 Nottingham – NEVER DARK (1pt win – 11/2 William Hill)
NEVER DARK, backed from 33-1 into 10-1, could only finish seventh when I put him up as a bet for a Class 2 handicap at Haydock on September 28th but bounced back to land a Class 3 contest at Hamilton just 48 hours later. The size of the field is the key requirement for Iain Jardine’s seven-year-old, whose record in single-figure line-ups now reads 254233135172117611973161 (8-24) for a profit of £30.08 to a £1 level stake at SP. His trainer has a solid record on turf (Flat and jumps) with last-time out winners who are returned to the track 20 days or sooner since their victory, scoring with 68 of the 238 qualifiers (28.6% strike-rate) for a profit of £49.97 to a £1 level stake at SP.
5.20 Nottingham – FORTUNATE STAR (1pt win – 5/1 bet365)
I try not to get too involved in amateur riders’ handicaps but stall 1 of 13 looks ideal for Declan Carroll’s FORTUNATE STAR, who tends to hang to the left in his races. The four-year-old finished a creditable third on soft ground at Catterick on his latest start and clocked a fast time when third at Doncaster last summer, the most recent occasion on which he encountered genuinely bottomless conditions. Interestingly, the stall 1 runners have done well in this 5f handicap in recent years, with four wins (20-1, 9-1, 13-2 and 5-1) and an 18-1 nose second in the past ten years.
