3.30 Bath – ASH WEDNESDAY (0.5pt ew – 16/1 with bet365)

The Heather Main-trained ASH WEDNESDAY hinted at ability when an 80-1 fifth in a Windsor maiden on his second start last term and attracted some late market interest on his handicap debut in a 6f contest on fast ground at Lingfield in late May. Always trapped wide from the worst of the draw, he stayed in contention for the majority of the race, only weakening into a four-length seventh in the last 110 yards. That was most encouraging and, with his yard emerging from a quiet spell, he looks worth chancing to small stakes.

3.52 Thirsk – STREAK LIGHTNING (0.5pt ew- 12/1 with William Hill)

I’m not thrilled by the stall 1 draw for Ruth Carr’s STREAK LIGHTNING in this 7f handicap, but I still want to have a small interest on the seven-year-old, as his last-time-out Doncaster fourth has worked out incredibly well. Al Muqdad, the winner of that 7f Class 5 contest, was beaten over 1m next time but bounced back to score over 7f at Ayr last week, runner-up Finbar’s Lad finished a close-up fourth at Leicester on his next start, third-placed Charencey, best of the hold-up horses, ran second by a neck at Leicester before scoring on his return to Donny. Fifth-placed Red Maids, three and a half lengths behind Streak Lightning, finished second at 16-1 in a big field at Newbury before a 9-2 neck second at the same venue, while sixth home Albeseeingyer improved her RPR (Racing Post Rating) by 12lb when a 10-1 fourth at Carlisle. The seventh and eighth improved their RPRs by 18lb and 8lb respectively on their next runs. Streak Lightning is lightly raced for his age (just 12 runs on turf) and the first-time cheekpieces could eke out some improvement.

5.00 Bath – GALACTIC GLOW (0.5pt ew – 14/1 with bet365)

Both Bascinet and Angel On High are in my tracker after they did too much too soon on their latest outings but they could take each other on for the lead and they have another pacesetter to contend with in the shape of Boy George. The one who might be able benefit should the pace collapse is Joe Tickle’s GALACTIC GLOW, whose course record in June/July reads 11175 (3-5). Those wins came over 1m2f, but his yard is in good form and he might be able to sneak into the frame.
