4.53 Beverley – ELEGANT ERIN (0.5pt e/w – 10/1 bet365)
Paul Midgley’s ELEGANT ERIN, the 100-1 outsider, out-ran her odds to finish sixth under a patient ride in the Listed Beverley Bullet Stales over this course and distance last time and looks very backable now returned to Class 4 handicap company. The veteran loves stiff tracks and her combined record in handicaps at Beverley, Carlisle and Pontefract reads 23111512462123 (5-14) for a profit of £21.00 to a £1 level stake at SP, including victory in this very race 12 months ago.I liked EMERALDS PRIDE for a race at Sandown recently, but she was pulled out on account of soft going and I’m expecting the same today. If she does run, I’ll have a stake saver.
5.24 Beverley – STAR START (0.5pt e/w – 10/1 bet365)
STAR START has been running well under inexperienced amateur rider Charli Parker this year and was a big eyecatcher on good to soft going at Catterick in mid-July, doing well to finish fourth after doing too much too soon in a race run to suit the closers. Ruth Carr’s five-year-old won the next twice before an 11-1 neck second at Catterick and we can draw a line through his latest effort at Ripon where he stumbled and fell under Parker. Jimmy Sullivan could be in receipt of an easy lead here and he’s worth chancing, despite the ground being softer than ideal.
6.30 Kelso – GARDE DES CHAMPS (1pt win – 13/2 bet365, 11/2 William Hill)
GARDES DES CHAMPS is hardly prolific, winning just two small-field contests at Perth from 33 outings, but the Lucinda Russell & Michael Scudamore-trained nine-year-old has gone close in both course outings, finishing second by a short head when 14-1 on his latest visit and third by three-quarters of a length to Pay The Piper (re-opposes today) when 100-30 for this race last year. The change of headgear to a first-time visor could help – his stable is seven from 28 with this headgear since 2019 for a profit of £65.50 – and he looks over-priced.
