12.28 Southwell – FELTON BELLEVUE (1pt e/w – 4/1 generally)

FELTON BELLEVUE usually takes two or three runs to reach peak fitness and has followed the same pattern this term, receiving RPRs (Racing Post Ratings) of 92, 95 and 101 in his three starts, latterly when a six-length runner-up at Market Rasen. His handicap record from January to March reads 361214242231 (3-12), including a 9-2 win and a 15-2 second of ten from two runs here at Southwell and he can open his account for the season.

2.14 Southwell – RIALANNAH (1pt win – 16/1 William Hill/Sky Bet)

Like Taras Halls at Uttoxeter yesterday, stablemate RIALANNAH (also in the same ownership) went into the tracker after her comeback effort at Market Rasen in mid-October where she was heavily backed despite the six-month absence and her yard’s terrible record with early-season break-returners. The 6-4 favourite trailed home 18 lengths behind the winner in fourth place and still looked in need of the run at Bangor next time where she pulled up. The five-year-old has made the frame in both subsequent runs and January is usually a good month for the Joel Parkinson and Sue Smith stable, with 64 of the 281 qualifiers since 2014 scoring (22.8%) for a huge profit of £144.07 to a £1 level stake at SP.

14:14 Jordan Recycling Environmental Mares’ Handicap Hurdle (Challenger Mares’ Hurdle Series Qualifier)

2.20 Musselburgh – BOOMSLANG (1pt win – 4/1 generally)

BOOMSLANG won left-handed over hurdles – taking a weak maiden hurdle at Cartmel when starting as the 11-10 favourite – but is clearly going to prove best right-handed over fences. The Rebbecca Menzies-trained seven-year-old jumped persistently out to his right when a narrow runner-up at left-handed Newcastle on his second chase outing and scored on right-handed tracks either side of that effort (at Downpatrick and Carlisle). The seven-year-old idled in front at Carlisle last time and is worth a bet to maintain his 100% strike-rate in chases on right-handed tracks.

3.15 Cheltenham – SALVER (2pt win, 5/2 Betfair, Paddy Power, 9/4 generally)

SALVER had a fine first season for the Moore yard, scoring four times before his 10-1 third to Majborough in the Triumph Hurdle when doing easily best of an admittedly weak British-trained contingent. That form has been well advertised, with the winner scoring over fences on his reappearance and the runner-up, Kargese, finishing second to Sir Gino at Aintree before scoring in Grade 1 company at the Punchestown festival. Subsequent Galway Hurdle winner Nurburgring was back in fourth, while fifth-placed Storm Heart was only two lengths behind Kargese at Punchestown. Salver himself ran with credit on unsuitably fast going at Newbury on his return to action, finishing fourth to Navajo Indy in the Gerry Feilden, and today’s stiffer test of stamina will help.
