2.50 Ascot – BLUE PRINCE (0.5pt ew – 40/1 William Hill, 33/1 generally)
BLUE PRINCE has proved largely consistent since joining David Evans from Richard Fahey, recording form figures of 48113230 (2-8), with excuses for both of the out-of-frame efforts. The son of Blue Point became upset in the stalls and missed the break badly when only eighth at Wolverhampton last November on his second run for current connections and, last time, his tenth of 17 in a hot 6f Newmarket handicap was worthy of an upgrade as his patient running style was at a big disadvantage thanks to the strong tailwind. He fared fourth best of those to come from midfield or further back and Ascot will suit his running style. He’s upped in class to Group 3 level today but his speed figures suggest he’s not out of place and the generally available 33-1 looks a shade insulting, even accounting for the ground being softer than preferred.
4.00 Ascot – KUWAIT CITY (1pt win – 5/1 bet365)
John Butler has a fine record when teaming up with Jim Crowley, scoring with six of the 21 qualifiers for a profit of £33.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. KUWAIT CITY contributed when coming late to score at Yarmouth on good to firm going last time and today’s slower surface is unlikely to inconvenience. The four-year-old is two from two under Crowley and remains open to improvement after just a handful of runs over the minimum trip.
8.30 Kempton – CAJETAN (2pt win – 8/1 bet365)
CAJETAN got off the mark in first-time cheekpieces at Newcastle on last month’s seasonal return (also his first start since a gelding operation) and though receiving a lower RPR (Racing Post Rating) when sixth of 17 at Newmarket next time, I thought that run represented improved form as his patient running style was at a big disadvantage on a tailwind-affected day (in the same race as Blue Prince). The five horses who beat him received the following comments from the Racing Post…
Raced far side, led group
Raced far side, prominent
Raced near side, led overall
Raced far side, prominent
Raced near side, prominent against near rail
Cajetan (‘raced near side, towards rear’) emerged best of those to come from off the pace and third best of the near side group, a huge effort in the circumstances. He looks well drawn in stall 3 of 10 and there should be sufficient early pace to suit his running style, assuming he’s given a patient ride by James Doyle.
