Andrew Mount heads to Bellewstown and Kempton Park for his best bets of the day on Wednesday 1st October, as he looks to start the month strongly.

2.13 Bellewstown – MOGWLI (1pt e/w – 7/1 generally)
MOGWLI caught the eye when fifth of 15 in a 7f handicap at Listowel’s Harvest Festival last week, doing second best of the hold-up horses in a race dominated by early pace. The first five home were described as “made all”, “prominent, went second 2f out”, “pressed leaders”, “midfield” and “in rear”. In-form Bill McCreery’s eight-year-old is two from four at Bellewstown, including two from two in the autumn, with the wins coming just a few days either side of October 1st. Any rain will help and the stronger the early pace the better.
4.55 Kempton – JUSTCALLMESERGIO (1pt win – 9/4 bet365, 2/1 generally)
JUSTCALLMESERGIO wasn’t best drawn (stall 8 of 20) when 12th of 20 in the £100,000 Tattersalls Somerville Auction Stakes at Newmarket on August 23rd and it’s safe to draw a line through that effort, even allowing for him being switched more to the favoured far side after two furlongs. That race was dominated by high-drawn prominent racers, and we’ve already seen the sixth (Anaisa, stall 1), eighth (Arduis Invicta, stall 4) and tenth (Guernsey Angel, stall 7) land gambles next time out (12-1 from 40-1, 13-8f from 9-1 and 11-8f from 6-1, with the last two advised in this column). Clive Cox’s colt ran out a comfortable winner when 5-1 for a firm ground Bath maiden on his debut in mid-August, just seven days before his Newmarket run, and his breeding suggests that the switch to Kempton’s Polytrack won’t be a problem. His sire – Sergei Prokofiev – has the highest strike-rate of all the sires represented in this 6f novice stakes. Stall 11 isn’t ideal but I still want an involvement.
