1.50 York – JORDAN ELECTRICS (1.5pt e/w – 10-1 generally)
I took a chance and bet JORDAN ELECTRICS for the Stewards’ Cup last time despite the suspicion that he would still need the run and that his main target was today’s 5f 89y race – one in which he finished second by three-quarters of a length to Jm Jungle 12 months ago. Jim Goldie’s veteran could only finish 15th of 19 over 6f here on his belated reappearance on July 26th but was badly drawn in Elmonjed’s race and his 6.5L defeat at odds of 33-1 wasn’t a bad effort in the circumstances. He stepped up on that markedly at Goodwood a week later, finishing a 40-1 ninth of 27 from another bad draw, doing fourth best of the far-side bunch when it was an advantage to race stands’ side and taking his record under Mulrennan – on board again today – 113411211129 (7-12) for a profit of £19.23 to a £1 level stake at SP. His only other course outing with a recent run under his belt saw him finish a close-up second of 20 and while it’s hard to gauge any draw bias on the first day of the meeting, stall 11 of 20 gives him options. He’s shortened up since the declarations were revealed but I can see him starting as the 5-1 favourite.
3.35 York – SEE THE FIRE (1pt win – 8/1 bet365, 7-1 generally)
To those of you who have only found my daily GG column in recent years (it’s been going for almost 25 years now) this is going to seem like a terrible case of after-timing, but I selected the 50-1 winner of this race – Arabian Queen – back in 2015 on the strength of her record in small fields and 100% record left-handed. She got the better of Golden Horn that day and now her fourth foal, SEE THE FIRE, gets the chance to emulate her dam. The four-year-old also loves York, landing the Strensall Stakes over 1m1f at this meeting last year when were on runner-up Phantom Flight (see, it’s not all after-timing) and then bolting up by 12 lengths in the Group 2 Middleton Stakes at this year’s Dante meeting. She has acquitted herself well in Group 1 company twice since, finishing third to Ombudsman at Royal Ascot before her third to Whirl in an unsatisfactory Nassau Stakes in which she was slowly away in a race started by flag. The return to this venue gives her hopes of the reversing the Ascot form with the winner and she looks over-priced.
4.45 York – WOOHOO (0.5pt e/w 16-1 generally) & WOOLHAMPTON (0.5pt e/w – 18/1 bet365, 16-1 William Hill)
WOOHOO caught the eye when fourth from a poor high draw in a Racing League contest at Chepstow on August 7th and I have to take full responsibility for last week’s unlucky in-running tenth of 13 at Windsor as I picked her for the Racing Post’s naps table! It’s a slight worry that she’s only ever won in May/June and in fields of nine or fewer runners but she’s a bigger price than expected and is worth risking to small stakes.
WOOLHAMPTON’s 11th of 17 to Alzahir at Ascot on July 12th was much better than it looked as she had a poor low draw and she’s had excuses in two runs since. Rod Millman’s five-year-old again ran well from a poor draw in stall 1 when sixth at Ascot (first six drawn 14, 13, 12, 10, 7 and 1 of 14) – form franked by subsequent wins from the poorly drawn seventh and 11th – and the combination of 6f and stall 1 made life difficult when sixth of 12 in Chief Mankato’s race at Windsor on her latest outing. She has form over course and distance and could surprise.
5.20 York – UTMOST RESPECT (1pt e/w – 7-1 generally, including bet365 who are paying six places)
UTMOST RESPECT should have won over 5f here in his debut, but Oisin Orr managed to get him trapped on the rail and the winner had flown by the time he saw daylight. Richard Fahey’s colt performed well in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot next time, doing fourth best of the stands’ side group when a 10-1 seventh of 23 and gained a deserved success in a 5f Hamilton maiden on his latest assignment. The step up to 6f will suit on his handicap debut and his trainer is in better form than when he ran at Ascot.
