3.30 Ayr – GARDEN OASIS (1pt win – 11/4 bet365)
The Archie Watson-trained COMMANDING PRINCE was denied a hat-trick when only third at Bath on his recent turf debut and connections are quick to reach for the cheekpieces. His trainer has a very modest record with this headgear, scoring with just 27 of the 290 qualifiers (9.3% strike-rate) for a loss of £182.31 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 40.05, A/E = 0.67). The strike-rate drops to just 7.4% on turf (11 from 148, -£105.77) and I’m happy to oppose the four-year-old, especially as he was trading as the 15-8 favourite at the time of writing. Six of DETECTIVE’s seven wins have come at Carlisle, the other at similarly stiff Hamilton and he’s opposable now returned to Ayr where his record reads 3049 (0-4). ABDUCTION has still to win beyond 7f while course and distance winner HALE END represents Michael Dods, whose yard continues to struggle for winners (0-23 in the past fortnight). Process of elimination brings us to GARDEN OASIS, who dead-heated with Good Morning Alex at Ripon last time. That rival had excuses when letting the form down at Newmarket last Saturday (hampered by a loose horse) but the fourth and seventh ran one-three over the same track and trip next time while sixth-placed Urban Sprawl scored easily at Lingfield yesterday. Tim Easterby’s veteran is a Ripon expert but his record here in Class 4 company reads 113 (2-3) and unlikely plenty from this year, he is capable of backing up a win.

7.40 Kempton – PRESSURE’S ON (1pt e/w – 13/2 bet365)
PRESSURE’S ON could only finish 11th of 21 when a bet for this column in the Spring Mile at Doncaster last time but he actually did second best of those to chase the strong early pace on a day such tactics were virtually impossible to pull off because of the strong headwind. The prominent racers in third (Myal), 17th (Spirit Of Acklam) and 18th (Our Havana) all won next time out at odds of 3-1, 6-5 and 3-1 respectively, while 20th place Debora’s Dream improved his RPR (Racing Post Rating) by 40lb when a 40-1 three-length sixth of 14 from a poor draw at Chester next time. Ed Dunlop’s four-year-old is drawn wide in stall 11 of 14 but there’s not a huge amount of early pace in this race and I’m expecting him to break smartly and sit in the box seat position behind likely front-runner HIERONYMOUS.

Andrew’s Angles – Why the London Gold Cup Can Be a Group Race Springboard
There’s a cracking meeting at Newbury on Saturday where the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes takes centre stage. I want to use this week’s column to discuss one of the supporting races – the 1m2f London Gold Cup Handicap. This heritage handicap has often been a springboard to Group-race glory, as we can see from the…
