4.30 Yarmouth – FALCON NINE (1pt win- 7/1 with bet365)
I’m still smarting from not making The Wizard Of Eye a ‘best bet’ when he landed a punt in the Victoria Cup recently on his debut for Charlie Fellowes and I’m going to support another stable debutant today. FALCON NINE, ex-Sir Michael Stoute, started life with a solid effort over a straight 7f at Leicester, doing second best of the closers in fourth place from what was the worse of the draw. Runner-up True Genius, best of those to come from off the pace, won next time out and was given a mark of 106 after placing in Group 3 company the following season. Falcon Nine failed to score in five subsequent starts for Stoute, all over 1m-1m2f, and it’s interesting to see him returned to a straight 7f on his yard debut today. Fellowes has a good overall record at the first-time of asking with horses he takes over from other yards, especially in handicaps, scoring with 13 of the 64 runners (20.3%) for a profit of £21.73 to the usual £1 stake. Only one of those came from the Stoute yard – Dubious Affair – who won at 7-1 here at Yarmouth. FLYING SECRET disappointed at Newmarket when I tipped hm up last Sunday but it’s interesting to see him out again so quickly and I’ve had a saver.
8.00 Kempton – ZERO CARBON (2pt win – 15/2 William Hill)
ZERO CARBON, five from ten on the all-weather compared to just one from ten on turf, will appreciate the return to Kempton’s Polytrack after trailing home last in the Victoria Cup at Ascot on his latest start. The Richard Hughes-trained five-year-old landed a Class 3 course and distance handicap from the front on his penultimate start to take his course record to 11241 (3-5). He drops back down to Class 4 level today and that Ascot run was not as bad as it looked as he had a terrible draw in stall 3 and ducked right on leaving the stalls, putting him even further away from the stands’ side rail where the whole fielded headed. His record when switching from turf to the all-weather reads 211 (2-3), with both wins over tonight’s course and distance and the defeat, when 9-1 in a field of 13, at Wolverhampton.

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Is Being Gelded a Negative Where Flat Horses are Concerned?
The low draw dilemma proved as prevalent a discussion point as ever during the Chester May meeting last week. Andrew Mount discussed that in last week‘s column, but turns his attentions to a broader question for this week: should being gelded be regarded as a negative for flat horses? The Nigel Tinkler-trained Duran trailed home…
