7.55 Doncaster – PANAMA BLACK (1pt e/w 6/1 bet365, four places, 5/1 generally, four places)
PANAMA BLACK has won just once from 12 starts, with that victory coming over 1m on Southwell’s Tapeta surface, but he looks worth a bet to break his turf duck tonight. Brian Meehan’s three-year-old finished a creditable sixth to Bintshuaa on soft ground at Ffos Las on June 29th – the meeting where the majority of races were started by flag as opposed to starting stalls. That gave prominent racers a huge advantage and we’ve already seen hold-up horses from that meeting come out and win since, including a 33-1 shot at Newbury last Saturday and Popeye Doyle (15-8 from 14-1) successful at Wolverhampton last night when tipped in this column. The Ffos Las winner was always prominent whereas Panama Black, who lined up far wider than necessary, was hampered by a rival coming across him and was slowly away as a result. His four-length defeat was a good effort in the circumstances and the three-length fourth has already won since. The drop to Class 6 level tonight will help.
