4.30 Kempton – CAPTAIN CAIRNEY (0.5pt e/w – 33/1 bet365)
Wednesday’s racing is largely uninspiring and the only bet I want to have is a small each-way play on CAPTAIN CAIRNEY in this 1m restricted novice contest, despite the nagging doubt that we’re getting there a race too early. The William Muir and Chris Grassick-trained two-year-old was sent off at just 6-1 for a 7f Chepstow maiden in his debut in late August but didn’t live up to his billing as the joint third-favourite, trailing home 13 lengths behind the winner in sixth of seven after a slow start. That form received a boost when the 20-1 runner-up, Anywaythewindblows, who was also ridden patiently, won a fillies’ maiden at Wolverhampton on Monday. Captain Carney’s next outing produced another unplaced effort – a 25-1 eighth of 13 over today’s course and distance – but there was plenty more to like about it. That run came just 11 days after Chepstow and he was again ridden patiently in a race dominated by prominent sorts (the first four home were described by the Racing Post as “prominent, led after 2f”, “prominent”, “started quickly, led early” and “dwelt start, in rear, rushed up and prominent after 1f”). Fifth-placed Smartanck fared best of the closers, and he also won at Wolverhampton on Monday of this week. Nine-length sixth Grindleton, second best of the hold-up horses, hasn’t run since but ten-length ninth Paroled (“towards rear”) ran second when 15-2 for a Bath maiden next time while the seventh home Pantile’s Gift (“in touch with leaders”) built on that debut effort with an 18-1 third at Wolverhampton. It’s possible that we won’t see the best of Captain Cairney until he goes handicapping but his stable is 11 from 103 with third-time out juveniles since 2014 (+£5.92 to a £1 level stake at SP), including three from 16 in restricted races, with two of the beaten horses placing at 100-1 and 14-1.

Andrew’s Angles – Vital Gelding Stats And Trainers To Watch
The gelding of racehorses has been in the news this week after leading owner Kia Joorabchian (Amo Racing) claimed that Ralph Beckett had gelded one of his horses in error, nullifying any future stud value the horse in question may have had.
