3.15 Salisbury – MORTLAKE (1pt win – 6/1 b3t365,888Sport, 11/2 generally)
MORTLAKE, a winner from the front on fast ground at Leicester on his second juvenile outing, didn’t show a huge amount at York on last month’s comeback, finishing 11th of 15 under a patient ride. That run, his first for 256 day and first since a gelding operation, was clearly needed and he should leave that form well behind today. He looks the sole pace angle in this six-runner line-up if reverting to the tactics that served him so well at Leicester and his trainer does well with three-year-old handicappers on their second start back after being gelded, scoring with 24 of the 104 qualifiers for a profit of £72.86 (including 9-1 Royal Ascot winner Going The Distance).
5.15 Carlisle – BLUFFERONTHEBUS (1pt win – 13/2 William Hill, 888Sport)
BLUFFERONTHEBUS impressed me in finishing second by a neck at the last Carlisle meeting where all bar one of the winners came late/wide down the middle of the track. Those who took the stands’ side route were at a big disadvantage and Craig Lidster’s three-year-old deserves extra credit for her always-prominent runner-up effort against the ‘dead’ rail. That run took place on officially soft going but she was a winner on officially good to firm ground here in May and Proform’s going allowance suggested it was firm that day. It’s difficult to know whether stall 1 will be a help or a hindrance on watered ground today but there’s compensation in the price and she’s worth a small interest.
