4.35 Wincanton – JACOBS ACRE (1pt ew – 14/1 bet365, 12/1 William Hill)
The each-way thieves will be out in force for this 1m7f maiden hurdle and I can’t resist the temptation to take on 1-4 favourite Don’t Tell Su with one at double-figure odds. The jolly is clear on ratings but has been beaten at odds of 2-1, 2-1 and 4-11 in his three runs over hurdles and the cut back in trip doesn’t look an obvious move after he was noted as staying on well oven an extended 2m5.5f at Hereford last time. Second favourite Zoeman is another who looks likely to appreciate a stiffer test of stamina and my each-way arrow has landed on JACOBS ACRE for the bang in-form Neil Mullholland yard. The six-year-old shaped with promise in a 50-1 fifth of ten in an Exeter bumper last month on his return from a 279-day absence and he has the best last-time out speed figure (according to Proform’s ratings) for that effort.
4.45 Hereford – COBRA COMMANDER (1pt each-way – 10/1 bet365, William Hill)
I wrote the following about COBRA COMMANDER after his fifth place at Taunton on November 16th…
‘COBRA COMMANDER was beaten by a little over 22 lengths when only fifth of 14 in the Save our Sport Sign The Petition Handicap Chase but fared best of those to race up with the strong early pace and this was a solid effort in the circumstances. The Tom Symonds-trained nine-year-old seems happiest on good ground and might prove best in the spring, having recorded form figures in April of 114 (2-3), with the wins at 12-1 and 4-1. He’s now 0-23 in other months, though has numerous placed efforts to his name in February and March.’
He had two runs in a four-week period following that Taunton outing – finishing a 16-1 third of nine over 3m1f at Hereford and an 11-1 fourth of 13 over 2m5f at the same venue – before given a winter break when the ground turned soft/heavy. He looks the type to find a race now that spring has arrived and is worth chancing, despite the ground still being slower than ideal.
