1.50 Goodwood – CROWN OF INDIA (1pt ew – 16/1 bet365, BetVictor, William Hill)
Owner Fitri Hay holds a strong hand here and her three runners – Subsequent, CROWN OF INDIA and Clockmaker – are the three on my shortlist. The one I want to side with is Ed Walker’s Crown of India, who caught the eye when keeping on into third place behind runners from the Gosden and Charlie Appleby yards at Doncaster last time. He clocked a good Proform speed figure for that effort – the second best in the line-up (bettered only by Subsequent) – and his trainer is five from 21 with his handicap debutants so far this year (+£7.36 to a £1 level stake at SP). Seven of the beaten horses also made the frame and, with the gelded son of Camelot being almost four times the price of Subsequent, he looks an each-way punt.
3.00 Goodwood – USDI ATOHI (1pt win – 11/1 William Hill, 10/1 generally)
Backing the top two rated on Proform’s speed figures would have hit seven of the last ten Molecomb winners and made a healthy profit at SP and USDI ATOHI clocked a fast time when successful at 20-1 in a Tipperary Listed contest on her latest assignment. Admittedly, she raced on what looked the quickest part of the track, but she was still green, shifting left in the closing stages, and is now two from two at the minimum trip. Ryan Moore takes the ride, and she looks well berthed in stall 6.
3.35 Goodwood – FACTEUR CHEVAL (1pt win 6/1 bet365, 11/2 generally)
FACTEUR CHEVAL, runner-up to Paddington in this race 12 months ago, bombed out in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot last time but didn’t have a prayer after getting into a fierce battle for the early lead with Big Rock when the pair raced together on the far side, well away from where the race unfolded. It’s safe to draw a line through that and, with Rosallion a late withdrawal, this race has been blown wide open. He’s rated 120, just 1lb behind 6-4 favourite Henry Longfellow and 2lb behind Notable Speech (7-4) but is a much bigger price, thanks to the market over-reacting to his latest effort.
4.10 Goodwood – ELLADONNA ( 1pt win – 9/2 bet365, William Hill)
4.10 Goodwood – WISPER (1pt ew – 14/1 William Hill, Paddy Power)
Seven of the previous eight winners of this 1m2f fillies’ handicap finished in the top three in their prep race and backing the 37 qualifiers blind would have returned a profit of £34.33 to a £1 level stake at SP. Hat-trick seeker ELLADONNA qualifies on this angle and Ryan Moore’s mount is the first of two runners I want to side with. James Fanshawe’s four-year-old tends to need her first two runs after a long break but has form figures under other conditions of 111 (3-3). She’s been withdrawn once because good to firm ground was deemed unsuitable, so it’s possible that she’ll be pulled out if they don’t water overnight.
WISPER also qualifies on the top-three last time out angle and is worth an each-way play at a big price. The six-year-old found only Andaleep too good when going down by half a length at Windsor last time and the winner was desperately unlucky not to score when we backed him at the Racing League meeting at Yarmouth last Thursday. Somewhat surprisingly, she has mostly taken on male rivals during her 36-race career but, since qualified for handicaps, her record against her own sex reads 35112 (2-5), with the third at 100-1 at Kempton and the fifth by less than two lengths when poorly drawn at the same venue. Goodwood should suit this five-time Brighton winner and she looks over-priced.
